A proud Filipino-American, Vanessa was born to Filipino mother Gina Guangco and American father Greg Hudgens. She was born in Salinas, California and lived in Oregon and Paso Robles, California before moving to San Diego. She was quoted by teenhollywood.com as saying "pretty much I'm Filipino and Caucasian," when asked about her ethnic background.
Vanessa trained in dance, piano and voice (opera), which led her to roles in the musicals like the Carousel, The King and I, Damn Yankees and The Wizard of OZ.
